GINGIVAL CONTOURING & GRAFTING

Gum Contouring

We carefully diagnose why teeth look short
or why the gums have receded,
then plan the right treatment:
crown lengthening or gum grafting.

What is gum contouring?

When the gums cover too much of the teeth, crown lengthening
exposes an appropriate amount of tooth.
When the gums have receded
or become thin, gum grafting
reinforces the missing tissue.
We consider not only the tooth-to-gum ratio but also the position of
the gum bone and any future restorative treatment plans.

TYPE 01

Crown Lengthening (CLP)

Revealing the appropriate amount of a covered tooth

Performed when the gums cover too much of the teeth, making them look short, or when there is not enough tooth structure for restorative work. The height of the gum tissue and, where needed, the surrounding gum bone is adjusted to create a natural tooth proportion and gum line.

  • Improves teeth that look short

  • Adjusts gums that show too much

  • Improves an uneven gum line

  • Creates room for crowns and other restorations

TYPE 02

Gum Grafting (CTG)

Reinforcing gum tissue that is lacking or has receded

When the gums have receded and exposed the tooth roots, or when the gum tissue is thin, connective tissue is grafted to reinforce the thickness and shape of the gums. This can help protect the exposed roots and prevent further gum recession.

  • Reinforces receded gum tissue

  • Protects exposed tooth roots

  • Improves thin gum tissue

  • Eases sensitivity and cosmetic concerns

Gum Contouring Who It Is For

We assess suitability by looking beyond the visible gum line: the tooth roots, gum thickness
and the condition of the surrounding gum bone
are all checked.

Your gums show a lot
when you smile

Your teeth
look short or small

Your gum line
is uneven

There is not enough room
for a crown or restoration

Receding gums have
exposed your tooth roots

Your gums are thin or

Local Anesthesia and Gum Contouring

For crown lengthening, the gum tissue and, where needed, the surrounding bone are adjusted.
For gum grafting, connective tissue is grafted to reinforce the deficient area.

Gum Contouring Aftercare Instructions

To help the gum tissue heal in a stable way after treatment,
please follow the care instructions and visit schedule you are given.

Do not touch the treated area
with your fingers or tongue.

Repeated contact or pulling on your lip can interfere with
the stable healing of the sutures and grafted tissue.

Do not brush
directly on the treated area.

Brushing can cause bleeding or injury, so during the period you are advised,
clean only the surrounding areas gently.

Eat soft foods
that are not irritating.

Hot, spicy or hard foods can irritate the treated area,
so we recommend lukewarm, soft foods.

Avoid alcohol, smoking
and strenuous exercise.

Alcohol and smoking can affect tissue healing,
and strenuous exercise can increase bleeding or swelling.

Use prescribed medication and mouthwash
as directed.

Do not stop your medication or change the dose on your own,
and use mouthwash only as often and in the way you were instructed.

Contact the clinic if
unusual symptoms persist.

If bleeding does not stop or pain and swelling keep getting worse,
contact the clinic promptly so we can check your condition.

Gum Contouring Frequently Asked Questions

Browse the questions patients most often ask
before visiting Seoul Standard Dental Clinic.

How do you decide between crown lengthening and gum grafting?

When gum tissue that covers too much of the tooth needs to be adjusted, we consider crown lengthening. When the gums have receded or the tissue is lacking, we consider gum grafting.
The exact treatment is decided after examining the gums and gum bone.

Does crown lengthening always involve adjusting the gum bone?

Not in every case.
Depending on the position of the gum bone, how much tooth needs to be exposed and the purpose of treatment, we may adjust only the gum tissue or the surrounding bone as well.

When can veneers or crowns be placed afterward?

It is best to proceed once the gums have healed sufficiently and the gum line has stabilized.
The timing depends on the extent of treatment and the speed of healing, so we decide after monitoring your progress.

Is there pain or swelling after treatment?

Treatment is performed under local anesthesia, but once it wears off you may experience pain, bleeding or swelling.
These usually subside gradually as you heal, but if symptoms get worse you should have them checked.

Who performs gum contouring?

Seoul Standard Dental Clinic has a board-certified periodontist (Ministry of Health and Welfare), Dr. Park Yeong-ju, Senior Dentist. Complex cases that require adjusting the gum bone are assigned to the specialist, and routine cases are handled through collaborative care (confirmed by the clinic director, Aug 2026).

When is a gum graft (CTG) considered?

We consider it when receding gums have exposed the tooth roots and caused sensitivity, or when dark gaps appear between the front teeth.
Connective tissue is taken from the palate or a similar site and grafted to the deficient area to cover the root and thicken the gums. Suitability and limitations are judged after checking gum thickness and bone condition.

My teeth look more spaced out after scaling. Can gum contouring fix this?

The spaces appear because tartar that was filling the gaps has been removed and swollen gums have settled, revealing gum recession that had already occurred.
Gaps where gum bone has been lost do not regenerate on their own. Options such as composite resin, veneers or gum grafting are discussed case by case.
