PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

Gum Treatment

We carefully identify the cause of swollen, bleeding gums
and protect the gums and bone that support your teeth.

What is gum treatment?

Gum disease is inflammation of the gums caused by
plaque and tartar that build up around the teeth.
It starts as gingivitis, with swollen gums that bleed
when you brush, but if left untreated it can
progress to periodontitis, which damages the bone
that supports the teeth.
Gum treatment removes plaque, tartar and inflamed
tissue above and below the gumline to slow the disease
and help you keep your natural teeth longer.

Gum Disease Stages and
Treatment

Gum disease causes little pain in the early stages,
so it is easy to ignore.
We assess gum bleeding, pocket depth and bone loss,
then treat according to your current condition.

  • STEP 01
    Gum treatment: healthy gums illustration
    Healthy Gums

The gums are firm and pink,
support the teeth well and cause no pain.

    Scaling

  • STEP 02
    Gum treatment: gingivitis illustration
    Gum Inflammation (Gingivitis)

The gums swell and bleed when brushing. There is
little pain, but bacteria and plaque are building up.

    Root planing

  • STEP 03
    Gum treatment: early periodontitis illustration
    Early Periodontitis

The gums pull away from the teeth, pockets deepen,
and inflammation begins to spread into the bone.

    Periodontal curettage

  • STEP 04
    Gum treatment: moderate periodontitis illustration
    Moderate Periodontitis

Bone is lost and the teeth begin to loosen.
Without treatment, teeth may eventually fall out.

When gum treatment is needed

Gum disease can progress slowly even when
symptoms are mild.
If any of the following keeps happening,
have your gums examined.

Your gums bleed when you
brush or floss

Gaps are opening between your teeth
or food gets stuck often

Persistent bad breath or
an unpleasant taste in your mouth

Your gums have receded and
your teeth look longer

Your gums are red or
swell frequently

A tooth feels loose or
chewing is uncomfortable

Treated by a board-certified periodontist

When the extent of bone loss and the need for
periodontal surgery must be assessed,
severe periodontal disease calls for the detailed diagnosis
and treatment planning of a periodontist.

Gum Treatment Aftercare Instructions

To keep your treated teeth healthy for a long time,
please review these aftercare instructions and care tips.

Wait until the anesthesia wears off before eating

While numb, you could bite your cheek or tongue,
so please wait until feeling has fully returned before eating.

Avoid irritating foods

Right after treatment, choose soft, mild foods
rather than hot, spicy or hard ones.

Clean gently

Do not scrub the treated area. Use a soft toothbrush and
interdental cleaning tools as instructed.

Expect some temporary sensitivity

As gum swelling goes down and the roots become exposed, you may feel temporary sensitivity.
Let us know if it persists.

Avoid alcohol and smoking

Alcohol and smoking can interfere with gum healing,
so avoid them for the period we advise.

Come in for heavy bleeding or swelling

If bleeding does not stop, or pain and swelling get worse,
contact the clinic so we can check on you.

Gum Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions patients most often ask
before visiting Seoul Standard Dental Clinic.

What is the difference between scaling and gum treatment?

Scaling mainly removes plaque and tartar above the gumline.
If periodontitis has progressed and tartar has built up below the gumline, root planing or periodontal curettage may also be needed.

Does gum treatment hurt?

When treating deep below the gumline, local anesthesia is used as needed.
Temporary sensitivity or a dull ache may follow treatment.

Why is gum treatment done over several visits?

When the area to be treated is large or periodontitis has progressed in several places, treating the mouth section by section allows more careful work than doing everything at once.

Why do my gums look more receded after gum treatment?

As gums that were swollen with inflammation settle down, the teeth may look longer or the spaces between them may look wider.
How noticeable this is depends on how much bone was already lost.

Are scaling and gum treatment covered by Korean National Health Insurance?

Scaling is covered once per calendar year (January 1 to December 31) for ages 19 and over, with a 30% co-payment.
Gum treatment performed as part of periodontal disease care (root planing and periodontal curettage) is also covered (source: National Health Insurance Service, scaling benefit guide).
Scaling beyond once a year is not covered and costs KRW 50,000 (price as of 2026-08-17, confirmed by the Director).

Does a loose tooth always have to be pulled?

A loose tooth does not automatically mean extraction.
In early to moderate periodontitis, we can try to save the tooth with gum treatment and, when needed, regenerative procedures. Extraction is decided after reviewing the degree of bone loss and mobility on imaging.
Seoul Standard Dental Clinic assigns severe gum inflammation cases to our board-certified periodontist (Dr. Park Yeong-ju, Senior Dentist), who treats them in consultation with the team (confirmed by the Director, August 2026).

If my gums bleed when I brush, should I brush more gently?

The opposite: brush more thoroughly.
Bleeding is a sign of inflammation at that spot, and removing the bacterial film that causes it, gently but thoroughly, usually reduces bleeding within about a week.
If bleeding continues after several days of careful brushing, hardened tartar may be the cause, and scaling and an examination are needed.
