CONSCIOUS SEDATION

What is Sedation Dentistry
(Conscious Sedation)?

Conscious sedation brings the patient into a relaxed, sedated state,
and the patient's condition is watched closely throughout treatment.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses conscious sedation to ease
the tension and anxiety of treatment, so you can
receive care in a more relaxed state.
Unlike general anesthesia, you keep breathing on your own,
and treatment takes place in a sedated state in which
you can respond to the clinician's voice or touch.

General anesthesia vs. sedation

Both may feel like being treated while asleep,
but
the level of consciousness, whether you breathe on your own,
and the recovery process are clearly different.

Who sedation dentistry is recommended for

If you have strong dental anxiety or long treatment
feels overwhelming,
sedation can be considered after
a thorough consultation with the clinical team.

Strong fear of the dentist

If fear of dental treatment or a past experience has kept you
from getting care, you can ask about sedation dentistry.

Pain and tension feel overwhelming

Sedation can help ease the burden in higher-stress procedures
such as implants, wisdom tooth extraction and root canals.

Long treatment sessions are needed

You can ask about sedation for lengthy procedures such as multiple implants,
bone grafts or combined treatment of several teeth.

Memories of treatment are distressing

If the treatment process itself is psychologically stressful,
you can find out whether sedation dentistry is an option for you.

Older patients who find long surgery
hard to tolerate

After a careful review of general health and current medications,
we plan treatment to reduce tension and physical strain.

A strong gag reflex that makes
dental treatment difficult

Sedation helps ease the gag reflex and tension that arise when instruments
enter the mouth, so treatment can proceed more smoothly.

Seoul Standard Dental Clinic's 4 core principles
of sedation dentistry

From the choice of medication and sedation induction to monitoring
during treatment and recovery care afterward,
we put the patient's comfort and safety first
and watch every stage closely.

Point 01

Stable sedation induction,
more comfortable dental treatment

We use midazolam, a medication approved by the U.S. FDA, to ease anxiety
and tension and reduce the fear of treatment.
By watching the patient closely and maintaining an appropriate level of sedation,
treatment can proceed in a more comfortable setting.

Point 02

Medication that can be reversed when needed

In case sedation becomes deeper than expected, reversal with flumazenil
is available. From the choice of medication to the sedation level and the recovery process,
we check every step carefully and put patient safety first.

Point 03

A stable treatment setting with
less movement and tension

When anxiety and tension are eased, sudden movements during treatment
are less likely, which allows care to proceed in a more stable setting.
An individual treatment plan is prepared based on your condition and the scope of treatment.

Attentive care that continues
before and after treatment

From a thorough consultation and health check before treatment to monitoring during treatment
and recovery guidance afterward, we watch over the patient's comfort and safety
at every stage.

Sedation dentistry frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions patients most often ask
before visiting Seoul Standard Dental Clinic.

Is dental sedation different from general anesthesia?

Yes.
Dental sedation is conscious sedation: you are relaxed and drowsy but still breathe on your own and can respond to the clinician's voice or touch.
This is different from general anesthesia, which removes consciousness completely.

Will I feel pain during treatment?

Sedation is a way to ease anxiety and tension. To reduce pain, local anesthesia is given at the treatment site as well.
Treatment begins only after the anesthesia has been confirmed to be working.

Will I remember the whole treatment?

Because of the sedative, parts of the treatment may be hazy or not remembered well.
How much you remember can vary depending on your condition and the dose of medication used.

Can anyone have sedation dentistry?

It is not suitable for every patient.
The clinical team reviews systemic conditions, current medications, pregnancy, respiratory conditions and sleep apnea before deciding whether sedation is appropriate.

How much does sedation cost, and is it covered by National Health Insurance?

The conscious sedation fee at Seoul Standard Dental Clinic is KRW 300,000, and the cost of the treatment itself is separate (price basis date 2026-08-17, confirmed by the Director).
The sedation fee is a non-covered item under National Health Insurance, so it varies by clinic, and the treatment performed with it may be covered or non-covered depending on what it is.
Non-covered fees by institution can be compared on the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service website.

Can I have sedation if I have high blood pressure or diabetes?

It is often possible when the condition is well controlled, but we assess the level of risk beforehand and adjust the depth and method of sedation accordingly.
Be sure to tell us in advance about underlying conditions and any medication you take, including tranquilizers.
The main complications of dental sedation are airway obstruction and respiratory depression, so watching the patient's breathing during the procedure is essential. Seoul Standard Dental Clinic is equipped with a patient monitor (BM1) and oxygen supply equipment for this purpose (source: Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, National Health Information Portal, dental sedation; equipment confirmed by the Director, August 2026).

Can several treatments be done in one sedation session?

Several procedures such as cavity treatment, extractions and gum treatment can be grouped into one session.
However, there are limits to how long sedation can be maintained safely, so a large amount of treatment is split across sessions, and treatments that normally take several visits, such as root canals, cannot be finished in one day even under sedation.
The scope of treatment is set at the pre-treatment assessment.
