ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Root Canal Treatment

We carefully treat the inside of an infected tooth
to help you keep your natural tooth for as long as possible.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is formally called ‘endodontic treatment’.
It removes nerve tissue inside a tooth that has become
infected through decay or trauma, cleans and disinfects the canals,
and fills them with dental material.

It is a way to preserve the natural tooth and its function
without extraction, and depending on the extent of infection
and the condition of the tooth it may take several visits.

Root Canal Treatment Step by Step

We precisely check the extent of infection inside the tooth
and the condition of the root canals,
then proceed step by step from removing infected tissue
to cleaning, disinfecting, filling the canals and restoring the tooth.

We thoroughly remove the deep decay and
contaminated tissue that are causing the pain.

The damaged nerve is cleared out, and even the finest canals
are disinfected so that no bacteria remain.

The space left behind is precisely filled and sealed
    with a biocompatible filling material.

A crown is placed to protect the weakened tooth
    and restore normal chewing.

Root Canal Treatment Aftercare Instructions

To keep the treated tooth healthy for as long as possible,
please review the aftercare instructions and how to care for it properly.

Wait until the anesthesia wears off before eating

While numb, you may bite your cheek or tongue or burn yourself on hot food,
so please eat only after sensation has fully returned.

Avoid chewing on the treated tooth

A tooth under root canal treatment is weakened and can chip or crack,
so chew hard or tough foods on the other side.

Check the temporary filling

If the temporary filling protecting the inside of the tooth falls out or breaks, food and
bacteria can get in, so please contact the clinic.

Complete the full treatment schedule

Even if the pain has eased, the infection inside the tooth may not be fully cleared.
Do not stop treatment on your own; please keep your scheduled appointments.

Watch for severe pain or swelling

Some temporary discomfort after treatment is expected, but if the pain keeps getting worse
or the gums swell, contact the clinic so we can check the tooth.

Finish with the final restoration

A tooth that has had root canal treatment can be structurally weaker.
When needed, a crown is placed to prevent fracture and protect its function.

Root Canal Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

Browse the questions patients most often ask
before visiting Seoul Standard Dental Clinic.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

Local anesthesia is used when needed, which helps reduce pain during treatment.
If the inflammation is severe, or once the anesthesia wears off, you may feel some temporary discomfort.

How many visits does root canal treatment take?

It depends on the type of tooth, the root canal anatomy and the extent of infection.
When the canals need to be cleaned and disinfected several times, the treatment period and the number of visits may increase.

Can I still have pain after root canal treatment?

For a few days after treatment the tooth may feel dull or uncomfortable when chewing.
If the pain keeps getting worse or the gums swell, have the tooth checked at the clinic.

Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?

Not every tooth requires one, but a tooth that has had root canal treatment has less remaining tooth structure and a higher risk of fracture.
A crown is often considered for molars, which take the most chewing force.

Root canal treatment is covered by insurance, so why is my estimate several hundred thousand won?

Root canal treatment itself is covered by National Health Insurance, so the co-payment is typically tens of thousands of won per visit.
Most of the estimate is for the prosthetic work done afterward, such as a crown, which is non-covered by law (source: Rules on Standards for Medical Care Benefits under the National Health Insurance Act, Annex 2).
Ask for the estimate to be split into covered items (root canal) and non-covered items (crown and core).

My root-canaled tooth hurts again and there is pus. Does it have to be pulled?

Extraction is not the automatic answer.
Stepwise options to save the tooth remain: root canal retreatment, apicoectomy to remove inflammation at the root tip, and intentional replantation.
Seoul Standard Dental Clinic assigns complex cases such as retreatment and apicoectomy to our board-certified endodontist, Dr. Song Je-i, Senior Dentist, and treats them collaboratively (confirmed by our director, Aug 2026).

How long does a root-canaled tooth last?

There is no fixed lifespan.
The main reason such a tooth weakens is the amount of tooth structure removed, not the loss of the nerve itself. With a crown and regular checkups, teeth that last for decades are not unusual.
Because a tooth without a nerve may not hurt until a problem is advanced, regular X-ray checks are needed.
