ORAL CHECK-UP & PREVENTIVE CARE

Dental Checkups & Preventive Care

We help you check and care for your teeth before they hurt,
so you can keep them healthy for years to come.

What are checkups and
preventive care?

A regular examination of your teeth for cavities, gum disease,
existing restorations and bite, aimed at preventing oral disease.

Based on the findings, we recommend the preventive care you need, such as scaling, fluoride treatment or sealants, and explain how to care for your teeth at home.

National Oral Health Screening Eligibility

Eligibility and timing for the national oral health screening
depend on your age and screening type.
Check the schedule that applies to you and
have your oral health examined regularly.

Adult Oral Screening

  • Ages 19 and over Screened in even or odd years by birth year
  • Office workers Once every 2 years
  • Non-office workers Every year
  • Life-stage screening Once at age 40 and once at age 66

Infant and Toddler Oral Screening

  • Age 3 30 to 41 months
  • Age 4 42 to 53 months
  • Age 5 54 to 65 months

Why regular checkups matter

Early oral disease often causes no clear pain or symptoms,
so it can be hard to notice on your own.
Catching small changes at a regular checkup
helps keep treatment from becoming more extensive.

Checkups and Preventive Care Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions patients most often ask
before visiting Seoul Standard Dental Clinic.

Should I get a dental checkup even if nothing hurts?

Yes. Cavities and gum disease often cause no pain or obvious symptoms in the early stages.
Regular checkups are important for catching small changes early.

How often should I have a dental checkup?

If your oral health is good, once a year is generally recommended.
If you have been treated for cavities or gum disease, or are at higher risk, your dentist may recommend checkups every 3 to 6 months.

Does frequent scaling weaken the teeth?

Scaling does not grind down the teeth. It removes tartar and plaque attached to the tooth surface.
After the procedure you may feel temporary sensitivity or notice that the spaces between your teeth seem wider.

Are fluoride treatment and sealants only for children?

Sealants are mainly applied to the molars of growing children, where cavities form easily.
Fluoride treatment can also be used for adults at high risk of cavities or with dry mouth, depending on their condition.

Who is eligible for the national oral health screening in Korea, and how often?

People eligible for the general health screening can receive an oral screening at the same time. It is offered once every 2 years, and every year for non-office workers (source: National Health Insurance Service).
Seoul Standard Dental Clinic is a designated oral screening provider for the National Health Insurance Service and performs screenings for infants, students and employees.

How many times a year does health insurance cover scaling?

For ages 19 and over, once per calendar year (January 1 to December 31), with a 30% co-payment.
Unused coverage does not carry over to the next year (source: National Health Insurance Service, scaling benefit guide).
Additional scaling is not covered and costs KRW 50,000 (price as of 2026-08-17, confirmed by the Director).

Up to what age are sealants covered by health insurance?

Sealants on cavity-free first and second permanent molars are covered for patients aged 18 and under (source: Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service).
Other ages and teeth are not covered.
Fluoride helps remineralize early demineralization and is effective for adults as well.
