DENTAL IMPLANT REVISION

Implant Revision

We accurately diagnose the cause of a failing implant
and plan treatment to suit its condition, from saving it to removal and re-placement.

What is
implant revision?

Implant revision corrects the underlying problem when
an existing implant can no longer function normally
because of looseness, fracture,
surrounding inflammation
or jawbone loss. Rather than automatically removing and replacing it,
we first check whether it can recover,
and if it cannot be saved,
we remove the existing implant and, as needed,
perform a bone graft and place a new one.

Implant Revision Causes

To keep the same problem from recurring, we identify why the existing implant failed
and assess the surrounding jawbone and bite together.
Based on a precise diagnosis, we build a revision plan that fits the current condition.

Cause 01

Peri-implantitis

Inflammation of the gum and jawbone around the implant,
often influenced by insufficient oral hygiene.

Illustration of osseointegration failure as a cause of implant revision
Cause 02

Osseointegration Failure

The implant has failed to bond securely with the jawbone,
so it becomes loose or falls out.

Illustration of excessive bite force as a cause of implant revision
Cause 03

Excessive Bite Force

When excessive chewing force is applied to the implant,
the fixture may be damaged or come loose.

Illustration of poor oral hygiene as a cause of implant revision
Cause 04

Poor Oral Hygiene

Neglected care leads to inflammation around the implant and destruction of the surrounding jawbone

When implant revision may be needed

We accurately diagnose the condition of the existing implant
and the cause of failure
,
and carefully determine
whether revision is needed.

The implant is loose

The surrounding gum swells, or
bleeding or pus keeps recurring

Significant jawbone loss
around the implant

The implant has not bonded
properly with the jawbone

The position or angle makes
the prosthesis difficult to use

The implant or its connection
is fractured

So the same failure is not repeated: Implant revision at Seoul Standard Dental Clinic

Implant revision is not simply removing the old implant
and placing a new one.
The cause of failure must be analyzed accurately, the damaged gum
and jawbone restored,
and a new treatment plan built
with long-term stability in mind.

Implant Revision Surgical Process

After accurately identifying why the existing implant failed
and the condition of the jawbone,
revision proceeds step by step
according to the condition of your mouth.

Detailed Examination and Failure Analysis

A 3D CT scan and oral examination give a complete picture of the implant's bone integration,
the extent of inflammation, the amount of jawbone and the bite.

Removal of the Existing Implant and Inflammation Treatment

An implant that cannot be saved is removed in a way that minimizes damage
to surrounding tissue, and any remaining inflamed tissue is thoroughly cleaned out.

STEP 03.

Jawbone and Soft Tissue Reconstruction

Depending on the bone defect and gum condition, a bone graft or gum graft is performed
to prepare a foundation for the new implant.

STEP 04.

Healing and Readiness for Re-placement

After an adequate healing period, the recovery of the jawbone and soft tissue is checked,
and the timing and position of the new implant are planned again.

STEP 05.

Placement of the New Implant

Taking the recovered jawbone and the position of the prosthesis into account,
the position and angle of the new implant are set precisely.

Final Prosthesis and Regular Maintenance

Once the implant has bonded securely to the jawbone, the final prosthesis is connected,
and the condition is maintained through bite adjustment and regular checkups.

Implant Revision Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions patients ask most often
before visiting Seoul Standard Dental Clinic.

Can a new implant be placed right after the old one is removed?

If inflammation is minimal and there is enough jawbone, removal and re-placement can be done at the same time.
If infection or bone loss is severe, the inflammation is treated and a bone graft is performed, followed by a healing period before the new implant is placed.

Is a bone graft always required for implant revision?

Not in every case.
A bone graft may be performed alongside revision when the jawbone around the existing implant is insufficient or a bone defect is found during removal.

Is revision more difficult than a first implant?

When inflammation or bone loss has damaged the surrounding tissue, there can be more factors to consider than in a first surgery.
That is why a precise diagnosis of the cause of failure and the condition of the jawbone is so important.

How long does implant revision treatment take?

It depends on the condition of the jawbone and inflammation and whether a bone graft is needed.
Immediate re-placement may be possible, but when the tissue needs to recover, a healing period of several months precedes the prosthetic treatment.

What causes peri-implantitis, and how can I recognize it?

Peri-implantitis is a bacterial inflammation of the gum and bone around an implant, influenced by factors such as insufficient oral hygiene and smoking.
Because an implant has no periodontal ligament, unlike a natural tooth, it can progress quickly and often without pain. Bleeding gums, swelling or looseness around an implant call for an examination.

How much does implant revision cost?

A new implant is KRW 690,000 per tooth for Megagen ST, KRW 890,000 for Osstem BA and KRW 1,090,000 for Osstem SOI. If a bone graft is needed, KRW 300,000 (simple) or KRW 500,000 (complex) per tooth is added (prices as of 2026-08-17, confirmed by the director).
The scope of removing the existing implant and treating the inflammation is explained after a 3D CT diagnosis.

Can an implant placed at another clinic be revised here?

Yes.
We use a 3D CT scan to check the position of the existing implant and the surrounding bone, then plan in order: whether it can be saved, removal, bone grafting and re-placement.
Any records showing the type of the existing implant help us decide on abutment and prosthesis replacement.
